Ref: BBBH68446_1791367977Infrastructure & Platform Automation Engineer
Whitehall Resources are currently looking for a Infrastructure & Platform Automation Engineer on a hybrid basis in Cambridgeshire for an initial 6 month contract.
Job Overview:
The client is building engineering platforms that help teams move faster, operate safely, and consume infrastructure through software-defined, automated, and governed self-service workflows.
The work spans AWS, Terraform, Ansible, GitLab CI, HashiCorp Vault, internal developer portals, hybrid/on-prem integrations, and lightweight Python/Go services. The client is also exploring AI-assisted automation and tool-calling integrations where they can improve developer and platform workflows.
What you will do
- Develop and improve reusable Terraform modules, AWS environment repositories, Ansible automation, and Python/Go platform services.
- We will strengthen CI/CD pipelines for Terraform validation, automated testing, container builds, security checks, and controlled deployments.
- We will productionise fully self-service workflows for infrastructure requests, approvals, audit trails, and operational actions so no human interaction is required.
- We will review platform changes for security, reliability, least privilege, state impact, rollback risk, and long-term maintainability.
- We will work across multiple repositories and platform areas, depending on delivery priorities, with a focus on practical outcomes and safe production change.
- Ensure changes follow compliance, change control, audit, and least-privilege requirements.
What you will bring
- Deep Terraform and AWS platform engineering experience in production environments.
- Strong understanding of IAM, networking, EC2, ECS, RDS/Aurora, Route53, S3, Secrets Manager, CloudWatch, VPC endpoints, and cross-account AWS patterns.
- Confidence working in brownfield Terraform estates, including reusable modules, remote state, provider configuration, moved blocks, plan review, and safe incremental change.
- Practical automation skills using Python, Go, TypeScript or similar languages.
- Hands-on GitLab CI, Ansible, HashiCorp Vault, secure secret’s handling, and least-privilege automation experience.
- Ability to solve sophisticated platform issues and communicate clearly across engineering, security, and operations teams.
- Strong collaboration skills, with experience working effectively across cross-project teams and with engineers at all levels, from junior developers through to senior technical leads and architects.
Useful additional experience
- Internal developer platforms(example: Backstage), or self-service infrastructure workflows.
- Kubernetes authentication, policy-based automation, Spacelift, or Terraform orchestration platforms.
- Hybrid/on-prem infrastructure such as vSphere, IPAM/DDI, DNS, firewall automation, network/security baselines, or storage integration.
- AI-assisted workflows, MCP/tool-calling systems, or automation agents.
